Vandoren’s 5RV clarinet mouthpiece has been a popular choice for many players regardless of the genre they play. It has a medium short facing and a medium tip opening. Meaning it doesn't require too much air, but is open enough to allow for a great rounded tone. Created in the early thirties and given the name by Robert Van Doren himself. This mouthpiece is recommended by many teachers for its ease of control and is played around the world and chosen by many professionals.
Vandoren have created an extensive range of models to suit many different styles of playing depending on what you are looking for. Slight differences between the variations mean that you can get a mouthpiece that has the projection, articulation and comfort you are after.
Usually a narrow tip opening work best with a harder reed and a wider tip opening a softer one, but this is also down personal preference...there’s always an exception to a rule! The 5RV model with its medium-short facing would be best suited to stronger reed choices; a 3-4 strength reed would be a great choice.
